Pads, rotors and fluid
Brake pads wear down every time you stop, and how fast depends on your driving, your car's weight and whether you tow. Rotors wear too. They can sometimes be machined smooth, but once they're below the minimum thickness stamped on them, they need replacing.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and can make the pedal feel soft on long downhill runs or hot days. Many manufacturers recommend replacing it every two years. We check all three and quote before doing any work.
Warning signs from your brakes
- Squealing or squeaking when you brake
- Grinding or scraping, which usually means the pads are worn to the metal
- The car pulls to one side under braking
- Vibration or pulsing through the pedal or steering wheel
- A soft, spongy or low brake pedal
- A brake or ABS warning light on the dash

Brakes questions
How long do brake pads last?
It varies a lot. Driving style, vehicle weight, towing and stop-start town driving all make a difference. We measure what's left on your pads at every service and tell you roughly how long they have.
Do I need new rotors every time I replace the pads?
Not always. If the rotors are above minimum thickness and not warped or badly scored, they can often be machined or reused. We'll measure them and give you the options.
Is it safe to drive with squealing brakes?
Squealing is often the wear indicator telling you pads are getting low. Grinding is more serious and can damage the rotors quickly. Either way, get them checked soon. If the pedal feels soft or the car pulls hard to one side, don't keep driving it.
